To Conclude

Results of last week’s first ever, regional polls in Cameroon put CPDM on the topmost rung of the ladder. A dream come true for the party whose candidates worked tooth and nail to ensure the party’s victory. The CPDM had the support of the majority of the population and this was a great booster as it enabled the preparation to go on smoothly.

The steadfast and loyal militancy of candidates was a virtue that played in favour of the CPDM. Party authorities, all burnt the midnight candle to ensure that they obtain victory for the party. Meetings were held successively to educate and guide voters on the dos and donts in the highly priced election. The Secretary General Jean Nkuété braved all odds to reach the electorate in their catchment and dish out guidelines. Voters on the CPDM lists were one another’s keeper hence they put the party and not individual interests first by setting aside their differences as they charged defiantly towards their adversaries like one man and in unity of purpose.

Of the fourteen political parties that contested in the elections, the CPDM won with a total of 613 of the 700 councillors who voted in 58 divisional headquarters of the country.

According to Elvis Ngolle Ngolle, “out of the more than 10,000 (municipal) councillors who voted, CPDM constituted more than 90 percent of the voters. With this victory we will continue to push for a decentralised Cameroon where citizens are now direct participants in the making of decisions concerning the country at all levels,” Ngolle Ngolle added. Many factors propelled the CPDM to victory including a well-planned campaign strategy. Other parties that were unable to fill the list of candidates required for the election gave the leeway for the CPDM’s clear victory. The election of regional councillors in Cameroon is a cornerstone for the county’s decentralisation process.
